A Happy Ending to Matt's "Honeymoon"

Praise the Lord! Today, September 10th, 2007, after nearly three months of searching, I finally landed a teaching job--one that's conveniently located RIGHT OUTSIDE OUR APARTMENT!!! As it is written, "How great is Your goodness, which You have stored up for those who fear You..." (Ps 31:19). Thank you for your prayers and for patiently waiting on the Lord with me for this great blessing. My "honeymoon" (what Bryan calls the period of time before tentmakers find their job) is now officially over.

Here's a brief breakdown of how it all went down:

The first school John and I applied to upon our arrival in Taipei was HAPPY TOP, the school that previously employed Gina. We were really hoping we'd get hired at this school because it's literally one minute away from our apartment by foot, while most of the other schools we would apply for had up to 1hr commutes. Unfortunately, at the time we had absolutely zero experience, and it showed during our demos, which led to both of us getting rejected from our dream school.

After that we went our separate ways and John got hired at another school about 40mins away from home. Meanwhile I kept getting lots of interviews but no offers. I soon gave up hope on working at a school nearby and broadened my job search to anywhere remotely near an MRT stop.

Little did I know, there was a treasure hiding for me right in my backyard. And I never would've found it without God's providential hand working through Junia, who (graciously) brought me some ads she found at NTU. It was a just a few scraps of papers with phone numbers on them, but I thought what the heck...I'll give it a try. So I proceeded to do one of my favorite things: cold-calling.

Well, after a couple minutes talking with one of the phone numbers, I soon found out it was Dana from HAPPY TOP. She somehow still had a position available and needed to find a foreign teacher to fill it quickly. I proceeded to BEGGGGGG for a 2nd chance at a demo. I think I went a little overboard. She said she'd call me back in 10 mins. A couple hours later, I called and said what's up. She said she'd call me back after class. A couple days later she still hadn't called.

Then on Saturday morning she called and said come in; let's talk. Well, I was just thrilled to hear her voice so I went in cautiously hoping for good news. Then she told me that she was still interested in me and that I could do another demo on Monday. However, there was still one thing that made it so I couldn't accept the job in good conscience. Over the weekend I prayed that God would provide a solution to the problem so I could work there.

Miraculously, when I called Dana on Monday to tell her I was too sick to come in for the demo, she said she had "good news." She had found a way to fix the little problem we had. I said great, can I come in tomorrow for the demo? Then she said, it's alright, you can just COME IN TODAY TO SIGN A CONTRACT!!!!

And that's just what I did, today at HAPPY TOP. You know what's really cool, too? ALL OF MY CLASSES ARE 1-ON-1 CLASSES WHICH ARE WAAAAAAAAY EASIER THAN BIG CLASSES!!!

hmmm at what hour yesterday did you get this job?

haha, i was praying for you about 13 hours ago.

if it was after, then wow, PTL because that would be super encouraging to me and i would for sure pray a lot more!

if it was before, then wow, PTL, God is so gracious that He provides for us when we don't even ask sometimes; or maybe God worked through the prayers of other people.

i'm still learning about prayer!

haha, i guess also, if it was before, then i would learn to pray sooner after receiving ppl's prayer requests than waiting a long time later and praying for them.

but that is such wonderful news to hear, anyway! rejoicing with you all!
